Karachi Darbar

My family had always wanted to try some Pakistani cuisine. Since I had never visited Karachi Darbar before I suggested the place.

The restaurant also belongs to the Golden Group, which has several other restaurants around Muscat, their food has never disappointed me. Karachi Darbar is a restaurant dressed with the utmost simplicity with an aim to serve good food.

We chose a table on the first floor in the family section for the six of us.

The unadorned restaurant has a very simple menu with a lot of dishes to offer and the rates being quite on the cheaper side. For starters, Chicken Lollipop and Veg Spring Rolls were selected by the familia which didn’t take much time to get to us.

Pictured is the chicken lollipop with a serving of six pieces accompanied with a schezwan sauce, spicy yet delicious. The chicken was plump, moist and really tasty.

Veg Spring Rolls OMR 1.200

The spring rolls had a very tasteful filling though the outer pastry sheet has been fried too much which caused a darker shade and a more than usual crispiness.

Butter Naan and Rotis OMR 0.800

For main course, we ordered a Veg Jalfrezie, Chicken Masala, Chicken Dum Biryani with Raita and few butter naan and rotis.

The rotis were gigantic in size! I forgot to take a picture of them as my prime concern was hunger then.

The Chicken Masala was really tasty. The chicken pieces were fat and juicy, the gravy was wholesome and satisfying from the use of various spices. Less successful was the Veg Jalfrezie which was very bland taste wise. This was surprising because jalfrezies are supposed to be one of the spiciest Pakistani curries.

Chicken Dum Biryani OMR 1.400

The Chicken Dum Biryani was nicely done. Dum is an art of slow cooking for long hours to infuse all the lovely flavours. The rice and chicken was full of taste and the portion was decent. I did not taste the gravy which came along with the biryani, instead I chose a raita (Indian condiment of yoghurt, cucumber and hint of spices) which worked well with it.

Karachi Darbar has a limited selection of desserts. From the given list, I requested the waiter for Gulab Jamun (South Asian dessert of deep fried dumplings soaked in sugar syrup) but unfortunately they didn’t have any.

Overall the food tasted wonderful for its price, the service was quick and our dining experience was good. (Except for the unavailability of Gulab Jamun)

Total billing for two starters, three main courses, breads, raita and a large bottled water: OMR 8.000

  • Ambience: 6.5/10
  • Service: 7.5/10
  • Food: 7.5/10
  • Price: 8.5/10
