You know how sometimes you come across a beautiful picture of something you haven’t eaten in a very long time.
And then that image is stuck in your head all day. I was craving spaghetti so bad. Gorgeous spaghetti pasta mixed with little bits of herbs, grilled veggies and drizzled with olive oil. Sigh!
So Mukund bought the Entertainer recently and we decided to try out the restaurant offers. We settled for Italiano Pizzeria & Pasta after going through the long list.
The restaurant has two branches – one in Mawaleh and the other in Al Qurum.
The four of us – Karthik, Mukund, Daley and I visited the Qurum branch for a late dinner on a weekday. Italiano has seating on two levels, the space isn’t quite big although the décor is stylish with a contemporary feel.
As standard with most Italian restaurants, Italiano offers a variety of anitpastos, pizzas, pastas, risottos. The menu makes for an attractive read and could easily tempt the diner into over ordering.
We began our meal with the Italiano Chicken Wings. They looked very very different from the image in the menu, LOL. The chicken was nice and moist but taste wise, they could have been better. The BBQ sauce that came along with it wasn’t that great either.
The entertainer coupon offered a free pizza on purchase of one. The boys selected two large classic pizzas – Quattro Formaggi and Tres Amigo.
Quattro Formaggi was a brilliant cheese-only classic pizza consisting of four different types of cheese – mozzarella, cheddar, Edam and Emmental dressed with olive oil and dried oregano. The pizza had an extremely rich taste from the amazing mix of cheeses and this is by far the best cheese pizza we have ever had.
Tres Amigos was loaded with meaty toppings. This classic pizza had chicken, pepperoni, ground beef, turkey ham, tomato sauce, green bell peppers, olives, onions, mozzarella and oregano. It was pure happiness in every bite. Everything on that pizza was cooked to perfection and delivered excellent flavours.
I ordered Spaghetti Alla Giardiniera for myself. This wasn’t exactly what I was picturing the entire day. Although the vegetables (aubergine, broccoli, mushrooms, cherry tomatoes, courgettes) tasted fresh and were cooked well, the sauce lacked flavour and excitement. It was a beautifully presented dish, but in short, it tasted dull. So much for my cravings.
For desserts, we selected Tiramisu and Oreo Chocolate Cheesecake.
The Oreo Chocolate Cheesecake was orgasmic. It totally made me forget the pasta. It had a good thick smooth texture and was deliciously comforting, rich and decadent. This dessert is a must have for every Oreo fan in Muscat.
The Tiramisu was pleasant, yet light in texture. The cake was creamy and tasty although the coffee flavor was a bit dull.
The Italiano experience was somewhat of a mixed one. We hit incredible highs with our pizzas and desserts but was let down by the starter and pasta. Ultimately what Italiano demonstrated that it has potential to produce excellent dishes even if the restaurant was inconsistent on the day.
