Oman’s biggest mall, Oman Avenues Mall opened last year, bringing many new restaurants to Oman. Zen Asian Bistro is one of them, opening their first store in Oman and expanding soon to other countries as well.
They also claim to have the largest sushi menu in the Middle East!
The restaurant has a very sleek and modern touch to its interiors. If you’re lucky, you can get the zashiki seating too. It is a traditional Japanese style setting where you sit on pillows/low seats on the floor in front of a low dining table. There are very few zashikis in the bistro; the rest of the place has the usual dining setting.
Zen Asian Bistro offers various dishes from different Asian countries. The items have a tiny flag next to them on the menu indicating the item’s country of origin. I like the educational touch to this.
We began our lunch with Prawn Money Bags, a Chinese dish, as the flag specified lol. The money bags are little pouches packed with yummy prawn fillings. Crispy on the outside and tender inside. The dish was paired with sweet chili sauce. Totally loved it.
Next we tried some sushi; a California maki roll and Green Dragon. California makis are my favourite. These were delicious. Big fan of crabsticks!
The Green Dragon had very beautiful presentation, shaped like a Chinese dragon and garnished with tempura flakes. The contents included prawn tempura, crabsticks, cucumber, spring onion, avocado and teriyaki sauce. It tasted excellent.
Mee Goreng was the one of the best noodle dishes I’ve tasted In a long time. It is combination of chicken and prawns stir fried with Indonesian noodles, blended with rich flavours and topped with fried egg. A must try guys!
For dessert, we had the Thai Mango Cheesecake and it was the best part of my day. A giant fat slice of happiness filled with cheese (OMG the cheese was good, idk what cheese is it was though but very very smooth) and topped with fresh mango slices. It’s perfect sharing for two.
I loved the food here and I will be coming back to Zen Asian Bistro for sure. But the service was a downfall as the waiters seemed a little confused about the items on the dish. Maybe a little improvement needed here.
