New Madras Restaurant & Café (Chettinad & Karaikudi)

This tiny hidden gem is located in CBD opposite the Oman Arab Bank. If you look carefully, the bright orange letters should grab your attention. If not for the board, the place looks like a closed office during the daytime.

The restaurant is small but neat and there is a family section too with four tables. The menu serves a variety of dishes from different cuisines (Chinese, Indian, Omani etc) but my suggestion is you stick to the South Indian items.

We ordered Sweet Corn Chicken Soup, Chicken Biryani ,Prawns Masala, Chettinad Chicken Masala, Fish Thali for the four of us. Seems like a lot of food but we finished it all :D

Sweet Corn Soup (Non-Veg) OMR 0.600

The Sweet Corn Soup was warm and good.

Prawns Dry Fry OMR 2.300

The Prawns Dry Fry was outstanding. There’s lot of unnecessary garnishing on it but the portion of prawns was still good. The spicing was spot on and it kind of reminded me of the scrumptious Prawn Fry’s you get in Mumbai.

Parotta 50 baiza per piece

The Chettinad Chicken Masala is one of my favourite south Indian dishes and this one tasted excellent. Literally finger licking good. The dish was perfect paired with Kerala parotta.

Chicken Dum Biryani OMR 1.300

The Chicken Dum Biryani serving is perfect for one person if you’re eating the entire thing. It’s not oily and tasted amazing with the raita.

Fish Thali OMR 1.300

All the thalis here costs less than 1.5 Rials which is a very good deal. The fish thali delivered a variety of great flavours. The main curry of Kingfish was delicious, other items (don’t remember the names) tasted good as well. The dessert was some kind of sheera, full of delicious calories and left me wanting for more.

Papadum, raita and sliced vegetables were complimentary.

Our meal was very satisfactory. The service was quick and efficient. We left with happy food babies. New Madras Restaurant & Café is downright worth frequent visits :D
