El Capo

El Capo is a Mexican bar and cantina in Manchester. I wouldn’t say it’s traditional, El Capo is way too cool for that. Their vibe is funky yet chilled with a dimly-lit atmosphere. The décor consists mainly of exposed brickwork and Day of the Dead artwork adorning the walls. Also, the bar has over 80 tequilas to choose from. (wow!)

The daily specials are such a steal making El Capo the perfect place for after-work socials. I was here to ‘take advantage’ of the Wing It Wednesday special which includes chicken wings for just 50p a piece. Happy hours are from 4pm to 7pm every day of the week and on Thursdays it is extended to 1am! I’d recommend not to miss out on that!

We kicked off with some drinks, heading straight for the yummy cocktails choosing a ‘La Esposa Tashita’ and a ‘Tangarina’. La Esposa Tashita was a deliciously sweet concoction created with vodka, lychee, lemon juice, watermelon and rose monin. I really enjoyed it.

Tangarina was tequila based and came with so much ice. Taste wise, it was great but I would have preferred less ice and more of the drink.

So the wings here come with varying levels of spiciness: Dry Rub (mild), Green Tomatillo (tad spicy), Smoked Chipotle (medium-spicy) and Diablo (extremely hot). We chose 12 wings, six of Dry Rub and six of Smoked Chipotle.

I really adored that their wings just happened to turn out ‘heart shaped’. Given that South American food is actually hot, I expected the Smoked Chipotle to be very spicy. But they weren’t for me. I should have gone for the extremely hot flavoured ones. (Next time!). But they were crispy, succulent and both flavours were finger lickin’ good. Wing It Wednesday could become a regular thing for me!

We also tried sides of mac n’ cheese and sweet potato wedges. The mac n’ cheese was cheesy, rich with flavour and the jalapeno toppings made things certainly better. The wedges lacked crispiness but tasted great nevertheless.

El Capo offers a refreshing take on Mexican food and drinks that are affordable for all. The daily specials are dependable and reasonably priced and the service is friendly and cheerful. It is a perfect spot for beating mid-week blues with superb drinks and food!
