Asha’s is a contemporary Indian fine dining chain of restaurants that opened in 2002. It has about 13 restaurants spread across the Middle East and UK. The restaurant belongs to Asha Bhosle, a renowned Bollywood singer who also shares a passion for food. Asha’s in Manchester has a proper fine dining restaurant and a dim-lit beautiful bar downstairs called the Bollibar.

The décor swanked of elegant Indian furnishings – beautiful lamps, cushions, scented candles etc. The Bollibar has its own menu with a variety of delicious tapas and small plates to accompany your drinks.

I was invited to an evening of Malbec tasting and 4-course small plates dinner at the Bollibar. The event was hosted by Liberty Wines of London.

Our first taste for the evening was a 2016 Argentinian Malbec – Finca Los Primos. It had a nice taste and a pleasant aromatic finish. Our dinner began with a wonderful bowl of pumkin soup poured over a cheese kofta. The soup was warm, comforting and hinted a slight taste of ginger and star anise. It was a perfect start to the evening.

Our starter included a venison samosa and a 2016 Mendoza Malbec from Argentina. This was my first time trying venison and I truly enjoyed it. The samosa was light and crispy on the outside and the meat, delectably soft inside. The dark garnet wine was dry yet fruity with a hint of spicyness. Paired really well with the venison.

Our main was a Chicken Awadh curry, very similar to a Chicken tikka curry where chicken tikka pieces are barbecued and then added to a tomato, onion and spices gravy. The chicken had an excellent texture and boasted smokey, succulent flavours. We got naan and rice with the curry and it obviously paired well with both. It was a tad bit spicy but that’s the best thing about chicken tikka. Paired with this main was a 2016 Malbec Mendoza Clasico which had a beautiful flavour, smooth tannins and fruity freshness.

For dessert, we were served a winter berry cheesecake and Innocent Bystander Moscato 2016. The combination was perfect. The Australian rosé helped in cleansing the palate. It also had a beautiful aroma of cotton candy and musk. The cheesecake was smooth, delicious and perfect in every way.

I had a fabulous evening at the Bollibar. The service was fantastic, the place gorgeous and the food absolutely superb. The wines are a must try because it tastes heavenly with the food. All in all, The experience was wonderful and I can definitely comprehend why Asha’s has received the ‘L’ Assiette Michelin’ (Michelin Guide’s Plate).
